Abstract:
The screens of the mapping acquisition systems (EM 302, EK 60, SBP etc.) will be broadcast 24 hours per day,
and will be monitored by both onboard and onshore mapping scientists. Mapping computers will sometimes be
controlled by the onshore team. The raw data from all sonars will be transmitted to shore and further
processing will be completed on shore. Automated bathymetric gridding will occur on the ship in order for
the onboard team to monitor and ensure adequate seabed coverage.
Purpose:
EX-18-05, from May 23 to June 1, is the first of two cruises in the region. From May 23 through June 27 NOAA
and partners will conduct a two-part, telepresence-enabled ocean exploration expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos
Explorer to collect critical baseline information about unknown and poorly understood deepwater areas of the
Southeastern United States. Located offshore Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, the South
Atlantic Bight – and more specifically, the Blake Plateau – is one of the least explored areas along the
U.S. East Coast. Though this region is home to millions of Americans and is experiencing some of the highest
population growth rates in the U.S., the South Atlantic Bight has some of the largest gaps in high
resolution ocean mapping data on the East Coast and limited previous observations via remotely operated
vehicle (ROV).

Description:
The SBE 45 is an externally-powered, high-accuracy instrument, designed for shipboard determination of
sea surface (pumped-water) conductivity and temperature. Salinity and sound velocity can also be
computed. Communication with the SBE 45 is over an internal, 3-wire, RS-232C link, providing
real-time data transmission. An optional Interface Box provides power, a NMEA 0183 port for
appending navigation information from a NMEA navigation device to the data stream, and an RS-232
port for appending SBE 38 remote temperature sensor output.

Sound Velocity Probe
Description:
The RESON SVP 70 sound velocity probe is developed for fixed-mount installation on surface ships,
outboard rigs, submarines, AUVs, ROVs and other self-propelled platforms. The SVP 70 uses the latest
electronic technology combined with an innovative mechanical design to yield a compact, robust, yet
very flexible product. The SVP 70 uses a direct path echosounding technique that instantly
compensates for temperature and pressure with internal sensors. The SVP 70 comes in a water
resistant case including brackets for mounting, a 3m accessory cable, bolts, and a user manual with
system description. Additional adaptor kits and fairing accessories are available.
