Abstract:
The ship will conduct 24 hour operations consisting of daytime ROV dives and evening/nighttime mapping
operations including during transit. During this cruise we will conduct 8 hour ROV dives on most days with
occasional 10 or 12 hour dives on particularly interesting or deep dive sites. ROV operations will focus in
depths between 250 and 6,000 meters and will include high-resolution visual surveys and limited sample
collection. Mapping operations will be conducted in 250m of water and deeper, and include transit and
overnight multibeam, water column backscatter, and sub-bottom data collection. Opportunistic CTD rosette
operations may be requested to collect more information about the environmental parameters at ROV dives
sites, or opportunistically at selected sites where collecting the data is considered important to
understanding the physical or chemical properties of the overlying water column. ROV and mapping operations
will not be conducted in state waters. CTD rosette operations may be requested in state waters.
Purpose:
EX-15-04 Leg II is the first ROV cruise of the CAPSTONE effort. Exploration operations for Leg II will focus
on areas around the North West Hawaiian Islands. Dives are planned in deep-water offshore of Oahu, Ni’ihau
and in and just outside of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). ROV dives will include
high-resolution visual surveys and limited rock and biologic specimen sampling. ROV dives during this cruise
will offer the first-ever look at deep seafloor habitats deeper than 2000m in PMNM. This expedition will
help establish a baseline of information in the region to catalyze further exploration, research and
management activities.

Description:
Deep Discoverer, or “D2”, is a 6,000m rated ocean exploration remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Operating
from the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer (R337), D2 is part of an advanced two-body tethered system. Its two
high definition cameras and 16,600 lumens of hydraulically positionable LED lights produce
broadcast-quality high definition video streamed live to internet connections around the world via
telepresence. Navigational sensors, including a fiber optic gyroscope and doppler velocity log, 40HP of
electric propulsion, and an integrated control system capable of precise auto-pilot flight and
station-keeping, allow pilots to image the most obscure objects of the subsea world. D2 transmits
real-time sensor measurements of conductivity, temperature, depth, pressure, and more through its high
speed fiber optic communications. Additionally, a hydraulic pump powers two 7-function manipulators and
an extendable utility drawer. Three large syntactic foam blocks give D2 the ability to install up to 400
lbs of additional equipment making Deep Discoverer a very flexible platform for ocean exploration.

Pan and Tilt Zoom Underwater Camera
Description:
The Kongsberg Maritime OE14-122 (PAL) and OE14-123 (NTSC) underwater CCD colour cameras provide
completely enclosed pan, tilt and zoom functionality previously unavailable. Based on similar
technology to the well-proven Kongsberg Maritime OE14-112/3 Zoom, Rotate and Tilt (ZRAT) Camera the
OE14-122/3 is most suitable for mounting on a horizontal axis. This allows the camera to be used in
a restricted space without fear of fouling or in a multi-role environment when a camera is required
to address multiple tasks. Close up inspection capability is obtained by using a 10x (40x with
digital) zoom for powerful long-range viewing. The OE14-122/123 uses the latest Super HAD and DSP
technology giving excellent light sensitivity and image definition. When used with the GUI provided,
control of the iris is possible, the camera can be given an ID number together with the ability to
display Time and Date and a built-in field memory allows a snapshot capability. In addition, an
advanced position on screen display feature is provided, as is the ability to control a series of
cameras in a multi-drop arrangement. The unique Kongsberg Maritime IR remote control allows long
line drive and camera control set up without risking damage to the integrity of housing seals.
