07/12/2013,11:57:46,Andrea Quattrini,Good morning everyone! Seas are calm today. Great day to dive~ 07/12/2013,12:02:12,Catalina Martinez,Good morning everyone. Feed 3 is down on I1 this morning, so we are working on it. All three feeds look great on VLC though! 07/12/2013,12:15:02,Andrea Quattrini,Good Morning Catalina and ISC! 07/12/2013,12:15:15,Andrea Quattrini,15 min to launch~ 07/12/2013,12:22:53,shanklab,Good morning Andrea. This is Taylor from the Shank lab, getting set up here. Will check comms shortly. 07/12/2013,12:24:10,Andrea Quattrini,Good morning everyone. We are currently southwest of NE Seeps 3 where we were yesterday, in a site that we are calling NE Seeps 2. Our current position is 39d52.2598N 69d17.0487W, and we are in an intercanyon area between Veatch and Shallop canyons. We are getting ready to launch D2 to a depth of ~1468 m at a base of a slope where we will continue up slope to the top of the ridge. A water column anomaly was detected by the Okeanos Explorer multibeam in 2012, and we re-confirmed that during last night’s mapping operations. The goals of today’s dive are to groundtruth this water column anomaly and hopefully discover chemosynthetic communities. We also picked up additional plumes in the multibeam from last night’s operations, so there are additional waypoints that we will likely have time to explore today. 07/12/2013, 07/12/2013,12:29:49,Tim Shank,This is great Andrea and all. 07/12/2013,12:30:10,Tim Shank,Are these new targets in the hypack? 07/12/2013,12:30:34,Andrea Quattrini,we are going to add 07/12/2013,12:31:52,Andrea Quattrini,D2 in water 07/12/2013,12:35:54,Andrea Quattrini,ISC coming in loud and clear 07/12/2013,12:36:17,Andrea Quattrini,ISC breaking up 07/12/2013,12:37:23,Andrea Quattrini, seirios in water 07/12/2013,12:40:23,Brendan Roark,ROV passing 25 m 07/12/2013,12:42:44,Brendan Roark,ROV at 50 m and holding 07/12/2013,12:45:01,Brendan Roark,ROV CTD temp 10.7°C 07/12/2013,12:45:39,Brendan Roark,ROV going down 07/12/2013,12:46:38,Brendan Roark,ROV passing 75 m going to 1468 m 07/12/2013,12:50:32,Brendan Roark,ROV passing 200 m 07/12/2013,12:55:45,Andrea Quattrini, audio tests 07/12/2013,12:55:50,Andrea Quattrini, passing 350 m 07/12/2013,12:57:28,Brendan Roark,ROV passing 400 m 07/12/2013,12:58:33,Andrea Quattrini, audio issues with the intercom system. for our ship to shore dive call this morning, please use your telephone 07/12/2013,12:58:51,Andrea Quattrini, back up and runnin 07/12/2013,13:02:20,Brendan Roark,ROV passing 500 m 07/12/2013,13:02:32,michaelvecchione,nemichthys 07/12/2013,13:03:04,shanklab,Thank you Mike for logging on the water column! 07/12/2013,13:03:09,Taylor Heyl,Dive codes attached below 07/12/2013,13:03:13,Taylor Heyl,BIO - Turner,FSH 07/12/2013,18:55:19,carolruppel,For those who missed all the discussion, this was a hydrate coating on the seafloor. some of the bubbles were forming hyrate quickly, some were trapped before they could get out, some may *MAY* have been forming hydrate in the water column (which makes sense but is not fully understood). No biota here as far as we can tell..This particular texture is associated with hydrate 07/12/2013,18:56:04,carolruppel,One point of discussion is whether there is something distinctive on flyovers that can help us distinguish clearly mat vs. clearly hydrate coating. This is like a thin ice rind on the seafloor 07/12/2013,18:56:23,Santiago Herrera, very interesting 07/12/2013,18:56:45,Scott France ,Thanks for that info. 07/12/2013,18:57:08,carolruppel,we are well within the P-T conditions for Hydrate stability here, so it is not a huge surprise to find it. Tom Weber at UNH is the expert on this and can look at the EK60 and the MB data later on to analyze target strength and how high the plumes go before the bubbles disappear 07/12/2013,19:00:56,carolruppel,in many places we see the plumes peter out about 100 m below the top of the gas hydrate stability zone, nominally 500 to 550 m on this margin...but that is a generic response, not specific for these plumes 07/12/2013,19:01:46,shanklab,Wow.
