                  Video from EX submersibles is collected on an Instant Replay System (EVS) in full-resolution, uncompressed format.  The EVS can store five hours of streaming video from any of the ship mounted or ROV video cameras before the footage starts to be overwritten.  Only three cameras can be captured at any given time.  During an entire dive, videographers identify footage that should be preserved and mark a starting and stopping point on the EVS for the clip.  That clip plus three frames prior and post are saved to a video Storage Array Network (SAN) in ProRes format.   Once the dive is complete, all ProRes clips are copied from the SAN to a Video Editing Station (VES).  On this station, procedures are run to minimize file naming errors: 1) the files are programmatically renamed to a common naming convention 2) the cameras are validated against a master list.  The videographer finally does a visual check on the free text annotation in the file names for anything that should be edited.  All of the dive’s ProRes clips (160 – 300 clips) are then placed in a Final Cut Pro project where a representative framegrab image is chosen from each clip and saved in a high-resolution format.  All of the ProRes dive video clips are run through a compression routine and saved in a low-resolution version.  Of all of the representative high-resolution framegrabs, fifteen are selected to represent the dive and saved as Highlight images.  During this process, the videographers maintain a digital log of process details.  A videographer produces a dive trailer using the ProRes clips and then saves the trailer in a ProRes format.  The trailer is then compressed into a low-resolution and high-resolution format.  For each dive, the low-res clips, the framegrabs, the highlight images, and the dive trailer (each in separate folders) are copied to the shipboard data warehouse computer via an Rsync routine launched manually. The ProRes clips are not copied, but remain on the VES.  A scheduled Rsync routine runs hourly to systematically copy the files on the data warehouse to a shoreside data repository via Telepresence.  The shoreside data repository has differing levels of user account access for distribution of these video and video products.

The EM 302 transducers are modular linear arrays in a Mills cross configuration with separate units for transmit and receive. This sonar offers significantly larger swath width, increased data density and resolution. Beam focusing is applied both during reception and transmission. The system has up to 288 beams / 432 soundings per swath with pointing angles automatically adjusted according to achievable coverage or operator defined limits. In multi-ping mode, 2 swaths are generated per ping cycle, with up to 864 soundings. With multi-ping the transmit fan is duplicated and transmitted with a small difference in along track tilt. EM 302 uses both CW pulses and FM sweep pulses with pulse compression on reception, in order to increase the maximum useful swath width. The transmit fan is split in several individual sectors with independent active steering according to accomplish compensation for the vessel movements: yaw, pitch and roll. The high density, high resolution, large coverage and water column capability makes EM 302 an ideal system to explore the sea bed and the water column for detection and characterization of a broad spectrum of features.
