We will be diving to a position (28.677N -87.554W) on the West-Facing Scarp of the DeSoto Canyon (DC) area at an approx. depth 2252m.  This area south of DeSoto Canyon has not been well explored. We will explore what appears to be the base and scarp slope hosting soft and hard bottom substrates (strong backscatter signals). During descent we will conduct a visual water column survey at 100 meter increments between 600m and 1200m. This will be exploring for mid-water prey items of sperm whales that are known to occupy this region (along the scarp) of the DeSoto Canyon. The ship will be transiting backwards while the ROV drives forward at each depth interval at an approx speed of ~1knot. This survey will likely take 70 minutes and we anticipate reaching the seafloor at approx. 11:15am US Eastern Time.  The current water depth below the ship is 2459m.  Our current coordinates are 28° 41.533N 87° 33.938W. 03/26/2012, 03/26/2012,12:02:04,Tim Shank,Mike Vecchione, when you come on, I have a question for you. 03/26/2012,12:02:39,Tim Shank,WHOI, do you read the EX? We want to get the conference call started please- with WHOI as lead caller. The EX will then dial in. 03/26/2012,12:10:51,Tim Shank,Preparing to launch the ROV 03/26/2012,12:11:35,Tim Shank,Good morning Mike, you there? 03/26/2012,12:14:24,Tim Shank,Mike, there is a desire to run the multibeam and EK60 by our mapping team during the water column survey this morning. They have been imaging bubbles off the seafloor looking for seeps and are curious if prey items, if in abundance, could be observed acoustically. I told them that I needed to check with you first to see that this was okay. Would it be okay to run the multibeam and EK60 sonar? Thank you. 03/26/2012,12:14:30,Tim Shank,ROV in water 03/26/2012,12:14:41,catrionamunro,Good morning Tim! All set up here at WHOI 03/26/2012,12:15:17,Tim Shank,Thank you Cat. This will be exploring for mid-water prey items of sperm whales that are known to occupy this region (along the scarp) of the DeSoto Canyon. The ship will be transiting backwards while the ROV drives forward at each depth interval at an approx speed of ~0.4knot. This is Dive #6 of this dive program. We will be diving to a position (28.677N -87.554W) on the West-Facing Scarp of the DeSoto Canyon (DC) area at an approx. depth 2252m. We will explore what appears to be the base and scarp slope hosting soft and hard bottom substrates (strong backscatter signals). We anticipate reaching the seafloor at approx. 11:30-11:45am US Eastern Time.  Our current coordinates are 28° 41.211N 87° 33.721W. 03/26/2012, 03/26/2012,13:59:30,Tim Shank, end of 800m transect 03/26/2012,13:59:49,Tim Shank, descending to 900m in this configuration. 03/26/2012,14:00:28,michaelvecchione,CTE on ROV 03/26/2012,14:00:46,michaelvecchione,MUC on ROV 03/26/2012,14:01:29,michaelvecchione,MUC on ROV 03/26/2012,14:02:03,michaelvecchione,MUC on ROV 03/26/2012,14:02:44,michaelvecchione,LAR on ROV 03/26/2012,14:03:21,Tim Shank, depth is 862m 03/26/2012,14:04:24,michaelvecchione,SIPH on ROV 03/26/2012,14:05:02,michaelvecchione,JFH on ROV 03/26/2012, 03/26/2012,14:05:39,michaelvecchione,UNI on ROV 03/26/2012,14:06:19,Tim Shank, beginning 900m 1006 ship bearing 150 at .4knots 03/26/2012,14:06:22,michaelvecchione,LAR onnROV 03/26/2012,14:06:31,Tim Shank, water temp is 5.66C 03/26/2012,14:06:44,Tim Shank,APH on ROV 03/26/2012,14:06:48,michaelvecchione,APH on ROV 03/26/2012,14:07:42,michaelvecchione,MUC on ROV 03/26/2012,14:08:19,michaelvecchione,FSH on RPV 03/26/2012,14:08:39,Tim Shank,Depth 902, Hdg 150 03/26/2012,14:09:15,Tim Shank,FSH 03/26/2012,14:09:26,michaelvecchione,MUC on ROV 03/26/2012,14:09:46,michaelvecchione,FSH on ROV 03/26/2012,14:10:24,michaelvecchione,LAR on Ser 03/26/2012,14:11:16,Tim Shank,Depth now at 900m Hdg 148 03/26/2012,14:11:47,michaelvecchione,UNI on Ser 03/26/2012,14:12:22,michaelvecchione,JFH on Ser 03/26/2012,14:12:59,michaelvecchione,FSH on ROV 03/26/2012,14:13:27,Tim Shank,LAR?
