Nice to see things back in action. 07/20/2011,15:46:56,Catalina Martinez,Estimated bottom depth for dive? 07/20/2011,15:51:17,Steve Hammond,Tim estimates 2450 m. 07/20/2011,16:05:11,okeanosexplorer,EX1103L2_DIVE07_20110720 Starting dive #7 of GALREX 2011 program. The Vsat system is down during the descent of this dive, so the communications and eventlog are down. LH entered the water at 0817, Seirios at 0822 and we are descending to the bottom. Current ship's position is 86 13.674W 00 48.37N. We are descending to an area that hosts the Rosebud hydrothermal vent site at 2450m. We are locating Rosebud at the beginning of this dive to orient our further exploration of the Rift in this region, which will likely be along east -west trending fissures just north of the field. Discovered in 2002, Rosebud was found after the historic site, Rose Garden was apparently "paved over" with lava. This site has not been visited since 2005, when Riftia tubeworms and bathymodiolid mussels dominated vent openings. The field was 60m x 40m with white seafloor markers, "A" and "B" on the eastern side, "F" and "L" centrally located, and "C" on the western side. On this descent, we are seeing lots of squid- down to at least 500m as well as what appears to be an abundance of larvaceans/ctenophores in our descent. At 0902 EX time, we are passing 625m. At 0910 at ROV depth 750m. At 871m stopping briefly to examine thrusters. Down at 20m /min. At 0935 at 1250m. At 1000, informed that we have the Vsat link back up again. 07/20/2011,16:05:21,okeanosexplorer,Good morning all. 07/20/2011,16:06:12,okeanosexplorer,Currently at 1939m 07/20/2011,16:09:21,okeanosexplorer,Stepping away from the microphone for just a minute. 07/20/2011,16:12:57,Catalina Martinez,EX, your update is GREAT info for our partners who may be hosting interpretive programs around the video feeds - such as the Exploratorium.
