We have explored the WP1 area at the summit of the SW knoll, current at this place was 335deg 0.1 knots. The bottom was completely covered with sediments, with the exception of one rocky outcrop. Abundances and diversity of epifauna were very low. Mostly dominated by ophiuroids, xenophyophores, a couple of octocorals (pennatulaceans) and two remarkable fish. On the rocky outcrop there was a concentrated amount of biomass. Black corals were dominiant and many ophiuroids were seen on the rock surface. We are currently moving NE toward WP2. We will descend to about 2200m and then start ascending again as we reach te base of the main cone of volcano G. We have moved from WP1 to WP2. The bottom along the way was completely covered with sediments, with the exception of one large rocky outcrop. Abundances and diversity of epifauna were very low on the sediments. Mostly dominated by ophiuroids and xenophyophores. On the rocky outcrop there was a extremely high concentration of biomass. Multiple species of black corals, bamboo corals and crinoids were dominiant and many ophiuroids were seen on the rock surface. We are currently moving E toward WP3. We will start climbing up will over a stepp slope and expect to find more hard substrate. WHOI signing out. 2010-07-26 07:08:29 okeanosexplorer good night, thanks for participating all 2010-07-26 07:11:43 okeanosexplorer UPDATE from the OE, we finished the dive number 17, the 4th one in this leg. Last segment from WP2 uphill to WP3 was mostly covered with soft sediments. As depth decreased the area of hard substrate increased and so did the diversity and abundance of organisms. Black corals, bamboo corals, and crinoids were dominant. Some new morphs of crinoids and a very interesting cf Metallogorgia branching in a single plane. most other fauna was similar to what was osberved on the hard substrate at the summit of the volcano on previous dive 16. 2010-07-26 07:12:02 okeanosexplorer excellent imagery was obtained today, thank you all 2010-07-26 10:59:40 marzamarzuki Hello..is there Rainer there? 2010-07-26 11:19:21 okeanosexplorer yups 2010-07-26 11:19:24 okeanosexplorer h r u? 2010-07-26 11:21:15 okeanosexplorer ada apa marza 2010-07-26 11:21:23 okeanosexplorer aman 2010-07-26 11:21:26 okeanosexplorer ? 2010-07-26 12:10:55 okeanosexplorer This is an Update from the Okeanos Explorer.
